Paterson is a city in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, its population was 146,199, making it the state's third-most-populous city after Newark and Jersey City, and the eleventh-most-populous city in the United States.
Paterson has the second-largest Muslim population in the United States by percentage.
The city was named for William Paterson, who served as Governor of New Jersey from 1792 to 1794. Paterson, which was home to many silk mills, was an early center of the American Industrial Revolution. The city has been called the "Silk City" for its role in the history of silk production in the United States.
Paterson is also the birthplace of the Passaic County Historical Society.
