Provo sits 43 miles south of Salt Lake City, between the Wasatch Mountains' 11,000-foot peaks and Utah Lake. Home to Brigham Young University's 33,000 students, this tech-industry city draws visitors to Bridal Veil Falls' 607-foot cascade, the limestone formations of Timpanogos Cave, and the Velour Live Music Gallery, where bands like Imagine Dragons and Neon Trees started their careers.

Getting to Provo

You can reach Provo through several transportation options. The FrontRunner commuter rail runs every 30 minutes during peak hours between Provo and Salt Lake City. Allegiant Air operates direct flights from Provo Airport to Oakland, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. The city connects to I-15 through multiple exits, putting you about an hour away from Salt Lake City International Airport.

Mountain Activities Near Provo

The Wasatch Mountains rise to 11,000 feet on Provo's eastern edge. In winter, you can ski at Sundance Mountain Resort, a 20-minute drive from downtown. From spring through fall, hike the 5.8-mile Rock Canyon Trail or mountain bike the 7.6-mile Slate Canyon Loop. At Timpanogos Cave National Monument, join a ranger-led tour through three connected limestone caverns to see rare helictite formations that seem to grow sideways.

Utah Lake Recreation

Utah Lake State Park borders Provo's western edge, giving you access to Utah's largest freshwater lake. Launch your boat from one of four ramps, swim at two sandy beaches, or fish from multiple piers. The shoreline campground has 31 RV sites with full hookups and 20 tent spaces. From May through September, you can paddleboard and kayak across the lake, or fish for channel catfish and walleye.

Provo's Music Scene

The Velour Live Music Gallery on University Avenue has hosted over 2,000 concerts since 2006. Watch local bands perform at Monday open mic nights, or catch touring acts in this intimate 300-person venue. Downtown's music scene extends to ABG's Bar with its weekly indie rock shows, while the Covey Center for the Arts hosts jazz quartets every Friday night.

Cultural Venues and Events

The Covey Center for the Arts presents plays, dance recitals, and concerts in its 670-seat main theater. During September's Festival Latinoamericano, 25 food vendors and three performance stages fill downtown for three days. The America's Freedom Festival in July includes a parade, hot air balloon launch, and culminates in a stadium show at LaVell Edwards Stadium that draws 40,000 people.
