Côn Đảo is an archipelago off the southeastern coast of Vietnam known for its historical significance and natural beauty. Once home to a notorious island prison during French colonial rule and the Vietnam War, it now attracts visitors with its preserved prison buildings, marine life-rich waters, and tranquil beaches. The Con Dao National Park offers hiking trails through lush forests, while the surrounding ocean provides excellent diving opportunities to explore vibrant coral reefs and marine biodiversity.

Historical Significance and Sites

Côn Đảo's history is closely tied to its prison buildings, the most famous being Phu Hai Prison. Established by the French in 1862, it held numerous Vietnamese revolutionaries. Today, you can visit the well-preserved cells and tiger cages that were used for solitary confinement. Another site of historical interest is Hang Duong Cemetery, where many of those who perished in the prisons are buried, including Vo Thi Sau, a national hero.

Local Food and Dining Experiences

Seafood is a highlight in Côn Đảo, thanks to its coastal location. Dine at locally cherished spots for fresh seafood dishes such as grilled squid and shrimp. Street food stalls near the market also provide an affordable way to sample local flavors, including banh mi and fresh spring rolls.

Local Nature and Wildlife

Nature enthusiasts will find much to explore at Con Dao National Park. The park covers around 80% of the main island and includes 14 different islands in the archipelago. Hiking trails like the So Ray Trail lead you through forests teeming with wildlife such as macaques and giant black squirrels. Birdwatchers can spot several endemic species in their natural habitats.

Beaches and Water Activities

Côn Đảo's beaches are another major draw. Dat Doc Beach and An Hai Beach offer clean sands and clear waters for swimming. The surrounding marine area is a prime spot for diving and snorkeling, especially around Hon Tai Island and Hon Cau Island, where you can see vibrant coral reefs and marine life including sea turtles and reef sharks. Rental shops on the main island organize guided trips, making it easy to experience underwater attractions.

How to Get There and Get Around

There are 16 islands and islets, but most visitors visit the main island of Côn Sơn. You can reach Côn Sơn by a 45-minute flight from Ho Chi Minh City or a 4-hour ferry from Vung Tau. Once on the island, motorbikes are the most convenient way to get around and can be rented easily in town. Taxis are also available for those who prefer not to drive themselves.
