Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam, is located near the Perfume River. The city's main attraction is its 19th-century Citadel, a vast complex surrounded by a moat and thick stone walls. Visitors can explore royal tombs, visit calm pagodas, and taste local dishes like bun bo Hue. The city's imperial past is reflected in its buildings and food, making Hue a unique place to visit in Vietnam.

Exploring the Imperial City

The Imperial City is at the center of Hue. Enter through the Ngo Mon Gate to see the Thai Hoa Palace, which houses a golden throne. Walk through the pathways to reach the Forbidden Purple City, an area once reserved only for the Emperor. Wars have damaged much of the complex, but ongoing restoration work helps visitors imagine its original appearance. You'll need at least 2-3 hours to explore the Imperial City.

Royal Tombs Along the Perfume River

The tombs of Hue's emperors are located near the Perfume River. Each tomb reflects the emperor it honors. At Tu Duc's tomb, you'll find a lake where the emperor used to fish and write poetry. Khai Dinh's tomb combines Vietnamese and European architectural styles with detailed mosaics. You can reach the tombs by boat, bicycle, or car. A half-day tour usually includes visits to 2-3 tombs.

Hue's Unique Cuisine

Hue's food stands out in Vietnam's culinary landscape. Try bun bo Hue, a spicy beef noodle soup, or banh khoai, a crispy rice pancake filled with shrimp and pork. For a special meal, book a multi-course imperial banquet at one of the garden house restaurants. These traditional homes were once owned by Hue's aristocratic families.

Getting Around Hue

You can easily explore Hue on foot or by bicycle. Cyclos (bicycle rickshaws) are a good option for seeing the city, especially around the Citadel area. For longer trips, such as visiting the royal tombs, you might want to hire a car with a driver or join a guided tour. Boats on the Perfume River can take you to some attractions.

When to Visit Hue

Hue often experiences rain. The months from February to April typically have the least rainfall, making this the best time to visit. During these months, temperatures are mild. If you don't mind occasional showers, September to December can be a good time to visit with fewer tourists. It's best to avoid June to August when temperatures are high and the air is humid.
