Prizren, Kosovo's second largest city, sits near the Sharr Mountains in the south. Its Old Town features cobblestone streets and houses from the Ottoman era, alongside mosques and churches from various periods. Exploring Prizren's Old Town
Shadervan Square forms the heart of Prizren's Old Town. As you walk the narrow cobblestone streets, you'll see many houses from the Ottoman period with wooden balconies and red-tiled roofs. The Lumbardhi River flows through the center, with several stone bridges crossing it. Stop at a cafe along the riverbank to drink Turkish coffee and observe daily life. Religious Buildings in Prizren
Prizren has both Islamic and Christian religious structures. The Sinan Pasha Mosque, built in the 17th century, features a large dome and tall minaret visible from many parts of the city. Step inside to see colorful floral frescoes covering the walls and ceiling. The Our Lady of Ljeviš church, dating from the 14th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. However, it suffered damage in 2004 riots and may not be open to visitors. On a hill overlooking the city, you'll find the Orthodox Cathedral of St. George from the 19th century. Its iconostasis showcases intricate Balkan woodcarving.
Prizren Fortress
For a view of Prizren from above, climb up to the medieval fortress on the hill over the town. The uphill walk takes about 20 minutes. The fortress, originally built in the 6th century, expanded over time. Walk around the stone walls and towers while looking out over the city and surrounding mountains. Many people come for sunset to see the changing light over the town. There are no facilities at the fortress, so bring water with you.
Local Food and Drink
Prizren's cuisine includes both Albanian and Turkish dishes. Try traditional foods like fli (a layered crepe pie), sharr cheese from the nearby mountains, or grilled meats at a qebaptore (kebab shop). Restaurant Ambient serves local dishes in a converted Ottoman house. The cafes around Shadervan Square offer spots for coffee and people-watching. In the evening, you'll find locals drinking beer or raki (fruit brandy) at the bars along the river.
Dokufest Film Festival
If you visit Prizren in August, you can attend Dokufest, the largest film festival in Kosovo. For one week, the city hosts film screenings, concerts, exhibits, and workshops. Films show in various places around town, including the fortress and on floating screens in the river. The festival brings many visitors to Prizren, filling the city with activity. If you plan to come during this time, book your accommodation early.
Getting to Prizren and Where to Stay
You can reach Prizren by driving about 1.5 hours south from Pristina. Buses run regularly between the two cities.
