Bamian is a small town in the Hindu Kush mountains of central Afghanistan, about 215 km northwest of Kabul. It is known for its two massive statues of the Buddha, carved into the side of a cliff in the 6th century. The statues, which are now mostly destroyed, were once among the largest in the world.
