Mazar-i-Sharif, also known as Sher-i-Afghan, meaning "Tower of Afghans", is a city in northern Afghanistan, about 160 km west of the Uzbek border, and 240 km south of Kunduz. It is the capital of Balkh province and is located in the Mazar-i-Sharif District. The city was founded in the late 6th century A.D. by the Kushan king Kanishka. It was the capital of the Kushan Empire.

Mazar-i-Sharif is one of the four holy cities of Islam. It is home to the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth caliph and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The city is also home to the Blue Mosque, the Shrine of Hazrat-i-Bibi Hafizah and the Shrine of Imam Awn al-Din.
