Comodoro Rivadavia is a port city in the Chubut Province of Argentina. It is the most important city in the Patagonian region, and is the seat of the government of Chubut. The city had a population of 237,895 in 2010. It is the principal city of the Comodoro Rivadavia Department.
The city was founded on November 3, 1901, by Scottish immigrant José de la Paz Santos. The city was built to support the local oil industry. Petroleum was discovered in the area in 1907, and the first wells were drilled in 1912. The city grew rapidly and soon became the most important city in the Patagonian region.
