Boating on Lake Hallstatt
Clear alpine waters stretch between limestone cliffs, where wooden salt boats glide past 41km of cycling paths and beaches.
A viewing platform extending like a metal hand over a 400-meter cliff in the Dachstein Mountains, with views of Lake Hallstatt.
The 5 Fingers viewing platform stretches from Mount Krippenstein in Austria's Dachstein Mountains, extending like a metal hand over a 400-meter cliff. Walk on glass floors, look through telescopes, or frame your photos of Lake Hallstatt through a baroque window. At night, the platform's lights shine across the Salzkammergut region, creating a distinctive silhouette against the mountain face.
Take the Dachstein cable car from Obertraun to the Krippenstein mountain station, where a 20-minute walking trail leads you to the platform. The all-inclusive cable car ticket costs €48.20 per person round-trip, giving you access to both cable car sections needed to reach the viewing platform. The cable cars run from May 11th to November 3rd during the 2024 summer season.
Each platform extends 4 meters over the cliff edge, giving you different angles of the landscape below. Step onto the glass floor of the first platform to look straight down the 400-meter drop. Position yourself at the baroque picture frame platform to capture Lake Hallstatt in your photos. Look through the mounted telescope on the third platform, while the fourth and fifth platforms point toward the Dachstein glaciers and surrounding mountains.
Walk the Experience Trail from the cable car station past 5 Fingers to reach the Pioneer Cross in about 20 minutes. Read information boards along the way about local rocks, plants, and wildlife. Visit the World Heritage Spiral near the Lodge am Krippenstein for clear views of both Dachstein glaciers.
You'll find two restaurants at the mountain station: Bergrestaurant Krippenstein and The Lodge at Krippenstein. The Lodge doubles as the only accommodation at this elevation. Both restaurants serve Austrian mountain cuisine, including goulash soup, Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes), and Alpine cheese plates.
In winter, snow covers the trail to the platform. You might need snowshoes depending on conditions, though the path remains accessible. Summer brings clearer skies and snow-free trails, making it easier to explore the surrounding area.
