Boating on Lake Hallstatt
Clear alpine waters stretch between limestone cliffs, where wooden salt boats glide past 41km of cycling paths and beaches.
A glass-floored viewing platform perched 2,700m high on a 250m cliff, with a suspension bridge, ice palace, and a transparent stairway descending into mid-air over the Austrian Alps.
At 2,700 meters above sea level, the Dachstein Skywalk puts you at the edge of a 250-meter vertical cliff face. Walk across glass floors to look straight down the mountainside, step onto a suspension bridge spanning a deep mountain crevasse, or descend the Stairway to Nothingness - 14 glass-walled steps leading to a transparent platform suspended in mid-air. Deep within the mountain, walk through frozen corridors lined with detailed ice sculptures in the Ice Palace.
Look straight down the 250-meter cliff drop through glass panels on the main viewing platform at Hunerkogel edge. The 40-ton steel structure withstands winds up to 210 km/h and snow loads of 8 meters. Up to 150 visitors can stand on the platform at once, making it one of the largest mountain viewing platforms in Europe.
Walk across the suspension bridge that spans a deep mountain crevasse from the cable car station to additional viewing areas. At the bridge's end, you'll find the Stairway to Nothingness - 14 steps descending to a glass-bottomed platform suspended in open air. The platform holds 1-2 people at a time, creating an intense experience as you stand completely surrounded by open space.
Enter the Ice Palace from the main platform area to walk through frozen corridors decorated with detailed ice sculptures. The temperature stays below freezing year-round, maintaining the ice formations. Each corridor reveals different aspects of the mountain's natural ice structures.
A basic ticket costs €37. Add €10 for Ice Palace access and €8 for the suspension bridge experience. Visit between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM during clear weather when visibility reaches to the Hohen Tauern mountains and Slovenia. Take the Dachstein glacier cable car to reach the Skywalk - some gondolas include roof platforms for additional mountain views.
Start your winter skiing or snowboarding directly from the Skywalk area. In summer, follow marked hiking trails through the Dachstein mountains. The paths range from easy 1-hour loops to challenging full-day hikes across alpine terrain.
You can eat at the Dachstein Glacier restaurant while looking out over the Alps through floor-to-ceiling windows. The menu includes Austrian classics like Wiener Schnitzel (€18) and apple strudel (€6). Find beach chairs around the viewing platform for mountain gazing. Walk the 30-minute circular trail around the mountain station to see the Dachstein's south face and surrounding peaks from different angles.
