Söll lies at the foot of the Hohe Salve mountain in Austria's Tyrol region. You can ski down an 11-kilometer floodlit slope at night, or take a ride on two illuminated toboggan runs. In the village center, the white baroque Church of Saint Peter and Paul rises above the alpine houses, its ornate interior dating from 1768. At the summit of Hohe Salve (1,829 meters), you can eat at a rotating restaurant while looking out toward the Kitzbühel and Zillertal Alps.
Winter Sports in Söll
The SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental network includes 280km of slopes accessed by 90 lifts. You'll find the beginners' area across the main road from the village, while a gondola takes you up to Hochsöll for intermediate runs. Night skiing covers 11km of floodlit slopes, with 3km in the valley and additional routes in Hochsöll. The Black Eagle piste descends at an 80% gradient on its steep south-facing slope.
Mountain Activities
Hiking trails spread across Hohe Salve mountain at elevations up to 1,829 meters. The Sundial Trail takes 30 minutes from the mountain station, passing historical time-measuring devices along the way. Mountain bikers can tackle the 1-hour Brandstadl circuit through the Wilder Kaiser - Brixental region, or spend 4.2 hours on the Hexenwasser-Filzalm lake route past alpine meadows and mountain lakes.
Hexenwasser Adventure World
In summer, the Hexenwasser (Witch's Water) becomes an open-air discovery park. The 1.5-hour barefoot trail - Austria's longest - leads past educational stations including a queen bee house explaining honey production and humming stones demonstrating sound vibrations. You can also visit the Simonalm farmhouse, built in the 1600s, to see alpine farming techniques from past centuries.
Getting Around
Three airports connect to Söll: Innsbruck (1 hour drive), Salzburg (1 hour 15 minutes), and Munich (90 minutes). Buses run regularly between the village and Kufstein railway station, Wörgl, and St. Johann in Tirol. A ski bus connects the village center with the Hochsöll gondola base station throughout the day.
Local Food and Mountain Dining
Mountain restaurants range from small huts to large eateries spread across the ski area. The summit restaurant on Hohe Salve rotates 360 degrees as you dine, with views extending to the Kitzbühel Alps and Zillertal Alps. In the village, you can try regional dishes like Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake with fruit compote) and Tiroler Gröstl (pan-fried potatoes with meat and eggs). To find a quieter lunch spot on the mountain, eat before 12pm or after 2pm.
