Located in central Jutland, this Danish town has grown from a textile center into a business hub, with MCH Messecenter Herning - Denmark's largest exhibition complex.
In central Jutland, Herning welcomes visitors with unique experiences: you can climb inside the 32-meter Elia sculpture to feel steam rushing through its steel chambers, watch ice hockey champions Herning Blue Fox defend their title, or explore modern Danish art at HEART museum, housed in a building shaped like giant shirt sleeves.
Art District in Birk
The eastern neighborhood of Birk contains several significant art venues. The HEART museum's white concrete walls form giant shirt sleeves – connecting to Herning's textile manufacturing past. At the Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelt Museum, you'll find an extensive collection of Danish CoBrA art movement works. The 32-meter-tall Elia sculpture by Ingvar Cronhammar dominates the open area. You can climb inside to explore its steel chambers and experience the occasional steam releases.
Sports Scene
Sports events fill Herning's calendar year-round. The Herning Blue Fox ice hockey team has won 16 national championships since its founding. You can watch FC Midtjylland's home matches at the MCH Arena, while next door, the Jyske Bank Boxen hosts handball championships and equestrian competitions. Each spring, professional cyclists race through the city streets during the GP Herning cycling event.
Getting Around
Direct trains connect Herning railway station to Copenhagen (4 hours), Aarhus (1.5 hours), and Esbjerg (1.5 hours). Three major roads - routes 18, 15, and 12 - intersect in Herning, linking the city to all parts of Jutland. For air travel, Karup Airport lies 25 kilometers northeast, with several daily flights to Copenhagen.
MCH Messecenter
MCH Messecenter Herning hosts events year-round in its exhibition halls. The main hall spans 15,000 square meters, accommodating everything from trade fairs to concerts and international competitions.
