Massawa is a city on the Red Sea coast of Eritrea. It is the capital of the Anseba region. The city has a population of around 188,000 inhabitants. Massawa was the most important port in the Horn of Africa in the late 19th century. The British Consulate is a prominent colonial building in the city.
