Vaasa is a sleepy city in the far north of Finland, known for its university and its annual summer jazz festival. The city centre is small and easy to navigate, with a pretty main square surrounded by historic buildings, and a lively nightlife scene. There are plenty of parks and green spaces, and a good selection of museums and galleries, as well as a lively cafe culture. Vaasa is a great place to relax and soak up the Finnish way of life.
I am part Finnish and have relatives in Vaasa so I have been visiting a lot throughout my childhood and a few times as an adult. I have great memories of fun summer days by the water and at some amusement park, but overall I was there to meet family and that made it enjoyable.
The town itself is okay, the food is pretty bad (as in most of Finland), but it is safe, clean and the people are friendly. Make use of the Finnish supermarkets' excellent selection of licorice of all varieties.
