Tampere

From factory smoke to tech startups and sauna steam

A former industrial center transformed into a tech hub, this Finnish city sits by Lake Näsijärvi. Visitors can explore museums, enjoy local cuisine at the market square, and experience nature nearby.

Tampere, Finland's third-largest city, sits between two lakes and has a rich industrial past alongside contemporary developments. In this city, you can visit the Moomin Museum, relax in public saunas like Rajaportin or Kuuma, and taste local foods such as black sausage. Tampere's cultural scene brings international artists to perform at the Nokia Arena, a modern multi-purpose stadium.

Tampere's Layout

Tampere stretches between two large lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. The city center is compact and walkable, with the Tammerkoski rapids running through its heart. You'll find many points of interest within a short distance of each other, making it easy to explore on foot. If you need to travel further, Tampere has an efficient bus system and a new tram line that can take you to most parts of the city.

Särkänniemi Amusement Park

Särkänniemi is one of Finland's most popular amusement parks. Thrill-seekers can test their nerves on the Hype ride, while families with younger children can enjoy the Doghill Fairytale Farm. The park includes an aquarium and the Näsinneula observation tower, which at 168 meters is the second tallest in the Nordic countries. You can dine at the tower's revolving restaurant for a panoramic view of Tampere.

Sauna Capital of the World

Tampere earned the title "Sauna Capital of the World" in 2018, with over 50 public saunas scattered throughout the city. You can experience traditional wood-heated saunas like Rajaportin Sauna, the oldest public sauna in Finland still in use, or try more modern facilities like Kuuma. Many saunas are located near lakes, allowing for a refreshing dip between sauna sessions - a popular Finnish practice.

Museums and Culture

Tampere has several interesting museums. The Moomin Museum, the only one of its kind in the world, displays original illustrations and tableaux by Tove Jansson. At the Vapriikki Museum Centre, you can explore exhibits on everything from natural history to game consoles. The Sara Hildén Art Museum has gained international attention by hosting the first public art exhibitions of Brad Pitt and Nick Cave.

Local Food

Tampere offers several local dishes to try. "Mustamakkara," or black sausage, is a Tampere staple often served with lingonberry sauce. For dessert, head to the Pyynikki Observation Tower café, known for its highly-rated doughnuts. The café also offers views of the surrounding lakes and forests.

Lakes and Nature

Despite being a city, Tampere offers easy access to nature. The Pyynikki Nature Reserve, just a short walk from the city center, features walking trails and the aforementioned observation tower. For a longer excursion, take a 20-minute boat ride from Laukontori to Viikinsaari island. Here you'll find nature trails, a public sauna, and a beach - perfect for a summer day trip.
