Kazbegi National Park covers 1,446 square kilometers in Georgia's northeastern mountains, with Mount Kazbegi rising 5,054 meters above sea level. Getting to Kazbegi National Park
Drive 150 kilometers north from Tbilisi along the Georgian Military Highway to reach the park in about 3 hours. The town of Stepantsminda, 10 kilometers from the Russian border, serves as your entry point to the park. You can drive yourself or join a tour from Tbilisi.
Natural Environment
The park's elevation ranges from 1,400 meters to Mount Kazbegi's snow-capped peak. Forests cover 35% of the land, while alpine meadows, glaciers, and rock formations make up the rest. Among the 1,347 plant species, 26% grow only in this region. Look for brown bears, East Caucasian tur, and lynx, or spot golden eagles and bearded vultures soaring overhead.
Hiking Trails and Activities
Start your hikes from Stepantsminda on clearly marked trails. Walk or take a 4x4 to Gergeti Trinity Church for a half-day excursion. Experienced mountaineers can attempt the six-day Mount Kazbegi climb, while day hikers might prefer the Truso and Khde valley routes. Bring sturdy boots, rain gear, and warm layers - the weather changes quickly in these mountains.
Gergeti Trinity Church
The stone church, built in the 14th century, sits on a hilltop above Stepantsminda. During wars, Georgians stored their most precious religious items here, protected by the remote location. Walk up the paved road from Stepantsminda, or drive if you prefer. Mount Kazbegi rises behind the church, making it a favorite spot for photographers.
Local Culture and Food
The Mokheves people who live here practice customs mixing Christian and pre-Christian traditions. Visit the Stepantsminda Historical Museum in writer Aleksandre Kazbegi's former home to see local crafts and artifacts. Join celebrations during the Atengenoba and Kazbegoba festivals. Try meat-filled khinkali dumplings or pkhlovana khachapuri (cheese bread with wild greens) at local restaurants.
Weather and When to Visit
The mountain climate keeps temperatures cool throughout the year, with especially cold nights. Plan hiking trips between June and September when trails are clear. Winter brings deep snow and difficult travel conditions. Even in summer, pack a warm jacket and layers - temperatures can drop suddenly.
