Nikiti sits on the Sithonia peninsula in Halkidiki, where you'll find local fishermen selling their catch at the marina, families swimming at the 3-kilometer beach, and elderly residents playing backgammon in the 19th-century town square. Above the shore, stone houses from 1830 line the streets, while the 5th-century Sofronios Basilica contains Roman-era mosaics.

Walking the Beach Promenade

The 3-kilometer promenade connects the marina to the southern end of Nikiti's main beach. Restaurants and cafes line the walkway, many with tables set directly on the sand. At the northern end near the marina, you'll smell grilled fish and seafood from restaurants supplied by morning fishing boats. Beach bars rent sun loungers and umbrellas, with waiters bringing drinks to beachgoers throughout the day.

Swimming and Water Activities

The main beach shifts between fine sand and small pebbles, with water that gradually deepens past the shoreline. Two diving centers run daily trips to Castri beach, where you can see submerged ancient walls, and to Kalogria bay for beginner diving lessons. From the marina, sailing boats take groups to nearby coves and islands, with most tours lasting 4-6 hours.

Exploring the Old Town

The streets of upper Nikiti wind past stone houses built in 1830, many still showing their original wooden balconies and stone chimneys. The 1867 church of Agios Nikitas sits in the main square, where small cafes serve Greek coffee under old grape vines. Local beekeepers sell pine honey at the Friday morning market, continuing a tradition that started in the 16th century.

Ancient History at Sofronios Basilica

The Sofronios Basilica dates to the 5th century, with floor mosaics showing geometric patterns and early Christian symbols from the Roman period. While regular access is limited, you can see many mosaics from the viewing area around the perimeter. The local tourism office organizes guided tours on specific dates throughout summer.

Day Trips from Nikiti

A 15-minute drive takes you to Ormos Panagias, where boats depart for Mount Athos viewing cruises. Livrohio beach, 5 kilometers north, has lifeguards and rental facilities. Drive 10 minutes south to find Agios Ioannis beach with its white sand and cedar trees. The pine-surrounded beaches of Koviou and Spathies lie within a 15-minute drive.

Events and Festivals

The Toroneos Swimming Marathon in July draws swimmers who cross the 26-kilometer gulf from Kassandra to Nikiti. Spectators gather along the beach during the six-hour event. Throughout summer, musicians perform traditional Greek songs in the old town square. The September feast of St. Nikitas includes a village procession and local food stalls.
