Omiš, a small coastal town in Croatia, sits where the Cetina River meets the Adriatic Sea. Once a pirate stronghold, the town now attracts visitors with its medieval fortresses, sandy beaches, and river canyon adventures. You can climb to Mirabella Fortress for views of the old town, raft through the Cetina gorge, or relax on Velika Plaža beach. In summer, Omiš comes alive with festivals celebrating Dalmatian culture. Located just 25 km from Split, Omiš works well as a day trip or a relaxing beach getaway.

Location Between River and Sea

Omiš sits at the mouth of the Cetina River on Croatia's Dalmatian Coast, about 25 km southeast of Split. Steep limestone cliffs flank the town on one side, while the Adriatic Sea stretches out on the other. This position at the river delta allowed Omiš to control sea trade in medieval times. Today, you can enjoy activities on both the river and coast due to the town's unique geography.

Exploring the Old Town

Enter the Old Town of Omiš through the East Gate, the only remaining entrance of the old city walls. As you walk the winding stone streets, you'll come across the 17th century Church of St. Michael in the main square. Look for the "House of the Happy Man," a Renaissance building with a Latin inscription thanking God for a good life. The Old Town's narrow alleys lead past cafes and shops selling local products like olive oil.

River Adventures in the Cetina Canyon

The Cetina River and its deep limestone canyon offer many activities. You can join rafting trips that navigate 10 km of rapids through the gorge, passing waterfalls and caves. For an adrenaline rush, try the Cetina Canyon zipline - eight wires strung across the canyon, some over 100 meters high. If you prefer a calmer experience, kayak on the lower river or take a boat cruise. You can also hike the trails that wind through the canyon and surrounding mountains.

Beaches Along the Omiš Riviera

The Omiš Riviera extends for 20 km along the coast, with a mix of pebble and sand beaches. Velika Plaža, the main town beach, has shallow water suitable for families. South of town, you'll find quieter beaches and coves around villages like Nemira and Stanići. The area of Duće has a long stretch of sandy beach. In summer, you can rent kayaks and paddleboards to explore the coastline, and beach bars open for refreshments.

Summer Festivals and Events

July brings the Festival of Dalmatian Klapa to Omiš, where you can listen to traditional a cappella singing. In August, the town reenacts its pirate history with mock sea battles during Pirate Night. Throughout summer, outdoor concerts and food festivals celebrate local cuisine. These events give you a chance to experience Dalmatian culture and interact with locals.

Pirate History and Fortresses

In the 12th and 13th centuries, Omiš was known as a pirate town. The Omiš pirates used fast ships to attack merchant vessels in the Adriatic, then retreated up the Cetina River to safety. Two medieval fortresses still stand guard over the town - Mirabella and Starigrad. You can climb up to both fortresses for views over Omiš and the coastline. The steep hike to Starigrad Fortress takes about an hour but offers the most extensive vistas.

Getting to Omiš

Buses run frequently between Split and Omiš, taking about 45 minutes. If you're driving from Split, follow the coastal road south. The nearest airport is Split Airport, about 40 km away. In summer, you can also reach Omiš by boat - excursions run from Split and nearby islands. Once in town, you can explore Omiš on foot. Renting a car or scooter allows you to venture further along the coastline and into the mountains.
