Ploče, a coastal town in southern Croatia, has grown around its commercial seaport and the Baćina Lakes. You can climb the distinctive Yugoslav-era skyscrapers for views of the Neretva Delta, join locals at the annual boat marathon, or try kiteboarding in the shallow waters where the river meets the sea. The town connects to both the Adriatic coastline and seven interconnected freshwater lakes, making it an active base for water sports and nature exploration.

Getting to Ploče

You can reach Ploče easily by bus from Split (2 hours) or Dubrovnik (1.5 hours). The town sits on the Adriatic Highway, and trains run regularly to Sarajevo. Stop by the railway station - its angular concrete design makes it one of the town's architectural landmarks.

The Port of Ploče

With seven terminals spread across 230 hectares, this commercial port processes 4.5 million tonnes of cargo each year, making it Croatia's second-largest cargo port. Walk along the harbor to watch cargo ships dock and unload, or take photos of the massive cranes at work.

Baćina Lakes

Walk 2 kilometers from town to find seven interconnected lakes: Oćuša, Crniševo, Podgora, Sladinac, Vrvnik, Šipak, and Plitko. Six lakes form a chain, with depths between 5 and 34 meters. Swim in waters where fresh and salt water mix through underground sea channels - you might spot both river fish and sea mullet in the same area.

Modern Architecture

Look up to see concrete towers rising above the town - these Yugoslav-era skyscrapers stand out against the stone buildings common in other Dalmatian towns. The railway station adds to this architectural theme with its sharp angles and practical design from the mid-20th century.

Summer Events

Watch more than 30 teams compete in the Neretva Boat Marathon, a 20-kilometer rowing race held in early August. During Traditional Fisherman Night, you can taste local seafood prepared by local families. The summer calendar includes music events from classical performances to rock concerts and electronic music shows.

Kiteboarding in the Neretva Delta

Head to where the Neretva River meets the Adriatic Sea for some of Croatia's best kiteboarding conditions. The shallow waters and steady winds make it ideal for both beginners and experienced kiteboarders. Take a boat tour through the delta's channels to spot local birds, or paddle through the wetlands on your own.
