Balikpapan is a city on the east coast of the island of Borneo in Indonesia. It is the second-largest city in East Kalimantan province after Samarinda. The city has a population of 675,363 according to the 2010 census; the latest official estimate (as of January 2014) is 703,390. Balikpapan is an important seaport and the base of Indonesia's oil and natural gas industry.
The city is located on the Mahakam River delta, on the eastern coast of Borneo. It is approximately 80 kilometres (50 mi) from the Borneo Highlands and is surrounded by coal mines. Balikpapan is one of the most developed cities in Indonesia, with a good infrastructure, including an airport and seaport.
The city is known for its seafood, especially shrimp. There are several seafood restaurants in the city.
