Tirupati is a city in the Chittoor district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is the sixth most populous city in the state with a population of 423,642. It is a municipal and a legislative council constituency.
The city is home to the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, one of the 12 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu, and is the most visited religious shrine in the world. The temple is also the richest in the world, with an annual revenue of over $1 billion.
The city is located on the southern banks of the River Swarnamukhi. The river is considered very sacred by the Hindus and is worshipped as Goddess Swarnamukhi. The city is also home to the Narasimha Swamy Temple, the Padmavathi Temple, the Govindaraja Temple and the Kalyana Venkateswara Temple.
