Lecco, a city of 47,000 residents, sits at the southern tip of Lake Como's eastern branch. It's the setting for Alessandro Manzoni's novel "The Betrothed". In Lecco, you can visit Villa Manzoni, walk along the waterfront promenade, or take a cable car ride up to Piani d'Erna for lake and mountain views.

Location and Geography

Lecco sits where Lake Como narrows into the Adda River, surrounded by the Bergamo Alps. The city's terrain is mostly flat near the lake, gradually rising into hills and mountains. This geography creates impressive views, as the clear waters of the lake reflect the towering peaks of Monte Resegone and Grigna.

Literary Legacy of Alessandro Manzoni

"The Betrothed" (I Promessi Sposi), considered the most important novel in Italian literature, is set in Lecco. Alessandro Manzoni, the author, spent much of his childhood here and used the city and its surroundings as the backdrop for his story. You can visit Villa Manzoni, the author's former residence turned museum, which displays first editions, manuscripts, and personal items related to Manzoni's life and work.

Exploring the City Center

The heart of Lecco is compact and easily walkable. Start your exploration at Piazza XX Settembre, the main square lined with cafes and shops. From here, you can see the 96-meter bell tower of the Basilica of San Nicolò, a prominent landmark visible throughout the city. The basilica itself, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors, has a neoclassical facade and medieval frescoes inside.

Waterfront Promenade

A key feature of Lecco is its lakeside promenade. Take a walk along the waterfront, enjoying views of the lake and mountains. The promenade has benches and trees, making it a pleasant spot for relaxation. Near the waterfront, you'll find the Ponte Azzone Visconti, a 14th-century bridge that gives you views of the Pescarenico district, the oldest part of Lecco mentioned in Manzoni's novel.

Mountain Activities

The surrounding mountains make Lecco a good base for hiking and skiing. Take the cable car from Versasio to Piani d'Erna, where you can enjoy panoramic views and access hiking trails of varying difficulty. In winter, nearby ski resorts have slopes for all skill levels. Cycling is also popular, with routes along the lake and into the hills suitable for both casual riders and serious athletes.

Local Cuisine

Lecco's cuisine reflects its lakeside and mountain location. Try local fish dishes like lavarello (whitefish) or persico (perch), often served with polenta. The area produces cheeses, particularly the Taleggio and Gorgonzola varieties. For dessert, try some local gelato while strolling along the lakefront.

Getting Around

Lecco has good train connections to Milan and other cities in Lombardy. Within the city, most attractions are within walking distance. If you want to explore other towns along Lake Como, regular boat services depart from Lecco's pier. For trips into the mountains, local buses connect Lecco with nearby villages and hiking trailheads.
