Perched on Monte Caputo near Palermo, this hilltop town has a 12th-century Norman cathedral with 6,500 square meters of golden Byzantine mosaics.
Monreale lies 7 kilometers south of Palermo on Monte Caputo's hillside, surrounded by citrus and olive orchards. You can explore the 12th-century cathedral with its golden mosaics depicting biblical scenes, walk among 228 decorated marble columns in the cloister, hike to the medieval Castellaccio fortress, or visit the 6th-century San Martino delle Scale Abbey.
Visiting the Cathedral
Bronze doors from 1186, created by Bonanno Pisano, open into the main nave. Inside, 6,500 square meters of golden mosaics cover the walls with biblical scenes from the Old and New Testament. A Christ Pantocrator figure dominates the apse, created with an estimated 2,200 kg of pure gold. Craftsmen from Constantinople completed these mosaics in under a decade, depicting detailed scenes of creation, Noah's ark, and the life of Christ.
The Medieval Cloister
The cathedral's cloister, completed around 1200, contains 228 marble columns arranged in a 47-square-meter courtyard. Each column has unique decorative elements, ranging from geometric patterns to figurative scenes. The carved capitals combine Arab, Norman, and Byzantine designs, telling stories from both testaments. Morning sunlight shines through glass mosaics embedded in the columns.
