This medieval Umbrian town produces world-renowned black truffles and traditional Norcino sausages. The stone buildings and Basilica of Saint Benedict line its central square.
Norcia, a small town in southeastern Umbria, sits in a valley beneath the peaks of Monti Sibillini. As the birthplace of St. Benedict, you'll find the town's restored basilica dedicated to the saint, medieval walls, and streets where norcineria shops sell their prized wild boar and cured meat products. Walk through Porta Romana to enter the historic center, where the smell of cured meats and fresh bread fills the air.
Traditional Norcineria and Local Food
The term 'norcineria' originated from this town, referring to the art of pork curing and preparation. Look for wild boar heads displayed as emblems on local butcher shops - a symbol of their centuries-old meat processing tradition. The surrounding mountains yield black truffles and mushrooms, while the fields near Castelluccio grow tiny, flavorful lentils. Try Pasta alla Norcina in local restaurants, made with local sausage, black truffles, and cream.
Rebuilding After the 2016 Earthquake
The 6.6 magnitude earthquake of 2016 damaged many of Norcia's buildings, including the medieval Basilica of St. Benedict. Today, reconstruction work continues throughout the historic center. Many businesses operate from wooden cabins near the town gates, creating a temporary commercial area. Along the main shopping street, you'll find cafés and traditional meat shops open to visitors.
The Monastic Legacy
Benedictine monks live and work in their monastery above the town, where they brew their own beer (Birra Nursia) and export it internationally. You can hear their prayers eight times daily - seven during daylight hours and once at night - continuing the traditions St. Benedict established in the 6th century.
Exploring the Surroundings
The Monti Sibillini National Park encircles Norcia with marked hiking trails where you might spot wolves, golden eagles, and wild horses. Visit Piano Grande near Castelluccio between May and July to see fields of red poppies, blue cornflowers, and yellow mustard. Go white water rafting on the Nera River or hike the mountain trails. Time your visit for the black truffle festival (Mostra Mercato del Tartufo Nero) in late February and early March to sample local delicacies.
Getting to Norcia
From Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi airport, drive 90 minutes to reach Norcia. Park your car in one of several lots outside the town walls. The town center is pedestrian-only, making it easy to explore the narrow streets and squares on foot.
