This ancient Roman settlement from the 4th century holds Luxembourg's largest collection of medieval manuscripts and hosts the annual Holy Blood procession on Whit Tuesday.
Echternach, Luxembourg's oldest town, stretches along the Sauer River on the German border. Walk through medieval streets to the twin-towered Basilica of St Willibrord, explore 2,000-year-old Roman villa ruins, or hike through the sandstone canyons of the Mullerthal region. Cool off with a paddle on Echternach Lake, or time your visit for the UNESCO-recognized Dancing Procession, where thousands hop through the streets in a tradition dating to the 12th century.
The Abbey and Basilica
The Romano-Gothic Basilica of St Willibrord rises above the town center with its twin towers and ornate interior. Built on the site of a 7th-century monastery, the current structure opened in 1953 after reconstruction from World War II damage. Visit the basilica's crypt to see St Willibrord's tomb, and explore the abbey museum in the vaulted cellars to learn about medieval manuscript production. The museum opens daily from 10:00-12:00 and 14:00-17:00, except Mondays.
Roman Villa Ruins
Walk through the remains of a 5,000-square-meter Roman Villa at the town's edge. The site preserves foundations from 70 rooms, including a heating system and bath facilities, dating from 70 CE to the 5th century. Read the information panels to understand how Romans lived north of the Alps. The site opens daily from April to October, 10:00-18:00.
Dancing Through the Streets
Each Whit Tuesday, the Echternach Dancing Procession fills the streets with movement and music. Participants hop forward in groups of five, holding handkerchiefs while traditional musicians play. Join thousands of dancers as they move from the abbey courtyard through medieval streets to the basilica. This celebration of St Willibrord has continued since 1100.
Exploring Mullerthal
Trek through the Mullerthal region on 112 kilometers of marked trails. The Mullerthal Trail splits into three routes, taking you through narrow canyons and past waterfalls. Squeeze through the Wolves' Canyon (Gorge des Loups), where rock walls tower above narrow passages. Pick up trail maps at the tourist office on Place du Marché.
Lake Activities
Rent kayaks and paddle boats at Echternach Lake from April to October, 9:00-18:00. Challenge yourself at the mountain bike park or try the indoor climbing wall. Kids can tackle the adventure course with rope bridges. A 3.3-kilometer paved path circles the lake for easy walks or bike rides. In July, the e-Lake festival brings electronic music to the waterfront.
Getting There and When to Visit
Take a 40-minute bus ride from Luxembourg City to Echternach - all public transport in Luxembourg is free. The town stays calm in spring and autumn, while summer brings triple the usual number of visitors. Experience the Dancing Procession on Whit Tuesday, or visit in December for the weekend Christmas market in the medieval town square. The tourist office on Place du Marché opens Monday to Friday 10:00-17:00, and weekends 10:00-16:00.
