Vianden's medieval streets wind along the Our River in northeastern Luxembourg. Walk past half-timbered houses to reach the 11th-century castle perched on a rocky hill, take a chairlift ride above the valley, or explore the rooms where Victor Hugo wrote his letters. In October, the scent of roasted walnuts fills the air during the town's traditional nut market.

Getting to Vianden from Luxembourg City

Drive 47 kilometers north on the N30, following signs to Vianden. By public transport, take a train to Ettelbruck station, then catch bus #570 to Vianden – the journey takes about 65 minutes total. The bus also connects to Diekirch and Clervaux, making day trips possible from these railway towns.

Visiting Vianden Castle

The castle sits 310 meters above the Our River. Walk through the 70-foot Arms Hall to see medieval crossbows, swords, and armor. The Byzantine Gallery has 10 trefoiled windows that illuminate the stone corridor, while the 15th-century Banqueting Hall contains an original fireplace decorated with coats of arms. The castle opens daily at 10 AM, closing at 4 PM in winter and 6 PM in summer. Adult tickets cost €10, while children aged 6-12 pay €2.50.

Chairlift and Viewpoints

Take the chairlift from May to September between 11 AM and 5 PM for views over the Our Valley. The 10-minute ride passes above pine forests and medieval walls. For photographers, morning rides capture the castle in the best light. A 15-minute walk leads to the Castle View platform, where you can see the eastern towers and walls up close.

Museums and Historic Streets

At the Victor Hugo House, read the author's handwritten letters and see his desk where he worked during his exile. The Museum of Arts and Crafts shows how local craftsmen worked with leather, wood, and metal in the 19th century. In the Doll and Toy Museum, find toys dating back to 1830. Follow the medieval wall trail to see 9 preserved towers from the original 24 that once protected the town.

Summer Activities and Local Events

The outdoor pool opens from June to September, with separate swimming lanes and a children's area. During the October nut market, local farmers sell fresh walnuts while bakers prepare traditional walnut tarts and candies. Pick up cycling route maps at the tourist office to explore the Our Valley's riverside paths, which connect to neighboring towns like Brandenburg and Stolzembourg.
