The city of Laayoune is located in the disputed territory of Western Sahara, claimed by both Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. The city is the largest in the territory and is the administrative and commercial center. It is a dusty, sprawling place, with a population of over half a million. The city is home to the University of Laayoune, as well as the headquarters of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. The city is also home to the Royal Palace of Laayoune, the largest palace in Africa.
