This calm coastal town on the Adriatic has 16th-century Venetian fortress ruins and a red-pebble beach. Its waterfront promenade connects two sandy bays lined with olive groves.
Petrovac na Moru, a coastal town of 1,400 residents between Budva and Bar, centers around a 600-meter beach of reddish sand. You can swim in the calm waters, explore the 4th-century Roman mosaics, or walk to nearby coves like Lučice Beach. The town has fewer crowds than neighboring Budva, making it particularly suitable for families.
Beaches and Swimming
The main beach curves for 800 meters along the bay, with changing rooms, showers, and beach chairs available. Children can wade safely, as the water remains shallow for about 30 meters from the shore. Cafes and small restaurants line the waterfront path behind the beach. Two additional beaches lie within walking distance: Lučice Beach sits in a cove surrounded by pine forest with beige pebbles, while Perazića Do takes 15 minutes to reach on foot and often has fewer visitors.
Walking and Hiking
From Hotel Danica, follow the marked trail through olive groves to reach Reževići Monastery, 4 kilometers away. The coastal path includes several spots to stop and view the Adriatic Sea, plus small churches along the route. A separate path leads to Perazića Do beach, taking about 30 minutes each way through pine woods and along rocky outcrops.
Day Trips from Petrovac
You can drive to Lake Skadar in 30 minutes to join boat tours of fishing villages and bird-watching spots. The former fishing village of Sveti Stefan, now a luxury hotel on an island, lies 10 minutes north - while the island is private, you'll find good photo spots along the main road. Budva's medieval old town, 20 minutes away, contains a network of narrow streets within its Venetian-era walls.
Historical Sites
The Kastel Lastva fortress occupies the northern end of the bay. The Venetians constructed it in the 16th century as a pirate defense point, and today it houses a restaurant and hosts evening events. Near St. Ilija's Church, a glass-enclosed building protects a 4th-century Roman mosaic floor, which once belonged to a villa complex with baths. Information panels explain the history of this Roman settlement.
Local Events
During the last week of August, the Night of Petrovac festival fills the waterfront with music performances and food stalls. Local fishermen sell their daily catch, and traditional dance performances take place in the main square over three days.
