Ivangorod Fortress is a picturesque and historically significant landmark of Russia, located on the right bank of the Narva River, in the town of Ivangorod, in the Leningrad Oblast. The fortress was founded by Grand Prince of Novgorod, Yaroslav the Wise, in 1050. The original name of the fortress was Yuryev. The fortress played an important role in the defense of Russia against Swedish and Polish invasions. Ivangorod Fortress was severely damaged in the Great Northern War (1700-1721), and was later rebuilt. Today, the fortress is a popular tourist attraction.
