Salekhard

Salekhard is a small city in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug of Russia. It is located on the Ob River near its junction with the Yenisei River, close to the Arctic Circle. Because of its position on the river, it is a major transport hub for the entire region, and is also a commercial center for the nomadic reindeer herders of the tundra. The city has a population of just over 43,000, but that swells to almost twice that number in the summer months as people from all over the region come to trade goods and services. The city is home to the Yamal Regional Museum, which tells the story of the people and culture of the region, and the Salekhard Drama Theater, which stages plays in both Russian and the indigenous Nenets language. There are also a few small parks in the city, and a number of monuments, including a statue of Lenin and a bust of Pushkin.
