Åre, a mountain village of 3,200 residents in Sweden's Jämtland region, has 91 kilometers of ski slopes winding down its mountains. You can ski black diamond runs where World Championship athletes competed, cycle down the same trails as UCI Mountain Bike champions, or taste reindeer pizza at local restaurants like Werséns. In winter, moose tracks dot the snow-covered forests where hunters and cross-country skiers explore the terrain.

Winter Sports in Åre

The ski area spans five zones: Duved, Tegefjäll, Rödkullen, Åre By, and Åre Björnen, connected by 42 lifts. You'll find 89 slopes ranging from gentle green runs to challenging black pistes, with a vertical drop of 890 meters from top to bottom. You can ski from late November through April, including night skiing between 6 PM and 8 PM on selected slopes.

Ski Areas for Different Skill Levels

At Åre Björnen, you'll find wide, gentle slopes and children's areas ideal for learning. The steep runs and off-piste terrain at Åre By challenge experienced skiers. Want shorter lift lines? Head to Duved and Tegefjäll, 10 kilometers west of the main resort, where intermediate runs help you improve your technique.

Mountain Dining

Choose from 26 restaurants across the mountain, most with table service rather than cafeteria-style dining. The menus include both Swedish and international dishes. In town, try the reindeer pizza at Werséns, or grab a quick meal from the Thai food truck near the chocolate factory.

Getting to Åre

Direct trains connect Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö to Åre station on the Mittbanan railway line. You can fly to Åre Östersund airport, 99 kilometers away, with direct flights from London Gatwick. Once in the resort, a free ski bus connects all ski areas.

Summer Activities

From May to October, ride the downhill trails at Åre Bike Park, where UCI Mountain Bike World Championships have taken place. The marked hiking trails lead you through mountain terrain, while paragliding gives you a bird's-eye view of the landscape. The golf course, 15 minutes from the village, has 18 holes.

Practical Information

Adult day ski passes cost 670 SEK (approximately €59), while youth passes are 537 SEK (€47) during main season. Lifts run from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with different hours during holidays and special events. Sign up for group lessons, private instruction, or specialized clinics in off-piste skiing and snowpark skills at the ski school.
