Tristan da Cunha is a volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is the most remote inhabited island in the world, 2,816 kilometres (1,752 mi) from the nearest inhabited land, Saint Helena. It is also the most remote point in the British Isles, being about 3,360 kilometres (2,090 mi) from the nearest point on the British mainland.
The island has been inhabited since the early 19th century. Administratively, the island is a dependency of Saint Helena.
The main settlement is Edinburgh of the Seven Seas.
