Konye-Urgench is an ancient city in Turkmenistan, located on the left bank of the Amu Darya River. It is the site of the ruins of the city of Khwarezm, which was one of the most important cities in Central Asia and the capital of the Khwarezmian Empire from the 12th to the 14th century. The city was destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century. Konye-Urgench was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005.
