Hsinchu lies an hour south of Taipei, where Taiwan's largest semiconductor manufacturers shape the global technology industry. You'll find the 1826 East Gate standing at the city center, incense-filled temples like Dongning and Chenghuang, and streets lined with rice noodle restaurants. Cool breezes from the Taiwan Strait sweep through the city year-round, giving Hsinchu its nickname "Windy City" and making it comfortable to explore on foot.

Getting to Hsinchu

Regular trains from Taipei take 60-105 minutes to reach Hsinchu station, located in the city center. From Taoyuan International Airport, take a U-Bus to Zhongli and change there for Hsinchu. The high-speed rail station in neighboring Zhubei city connects to Taipei in 35 minutes.

Walking Through Old Hsinchu

The historic district extends from the train station. Look for the East Gate, an 1826 structure that stands in the center of a busy roundabout. Walk west along Dongmen Road to reach Dongning Temple, then continue to Chenghuang Temple, where locals gather to eat and pray.

Local Food Scene

Rice noodles (mifen) define Hsinchu's local cuisine. Find them at the Chenghuang Temple food court, where local vendors cook traditional dishes throughout the day. In the evening, small bars and restaurants open along the old moat area between Minzu Road and Renyi Street.

Technology and Industry

The Hsinchu Science Park, established in 1980, houses Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and other technology firms. TSMC produces chips for smartphones and computers used worldwide. The international workforce in the science park has brought new restaurants and cultural influences to the city.
