Kaohsiung, Taiwan's third-largest city, is a southern metropolis with a large port and active art scene. This coastal city has many interesting sites, including the Dome of Light at Formosa Boulevard Station, the Pier-2 Art Center, and Cijin Island. You can visit temples around Lotus Pond, eat local food at night markets, or walk along the Love River. Kaohsiung has efficient public transport and warm weather year-round, making it easy for you to explore the city's urban areas and beaches.

Getting Around Kaohsiung

You can easily explore Kaohsiung using public transportation. The MRT has two lines - Red and Orange - covering major areas. Buy an EasyCard for travel on buses and the MRT. You can also rent a bicycle, as Kaohsiung has many bike paths in its parks and along the Love River.

Visiting Lotus Pond and Its Temples

Lotus Pond, in Zuoying District, is a man-made lake surrounded by several temples. The most recognizable structures are the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. You enter through the dragon's mouth and exit through the tiger's, which local tradition says changes bad luck into good fortune. In summer, lotus flowers bloom in the pond, creating a beautiful scene.

Discovering Pier-2 Art Center

Pier-2 Art Center is in a former warehouse district that now serves as Kaohsiung's creative center. The area has galleries, boutiques, and cafes in renovated industrial buildings. You'll see large-scale installations, murals, and sculptures throughout the complex. The center hosts regular exhibitions and cultural events, drawing both art fans and casual visitors.

Taking a Day Trip to Cijin Island

A short ferry ride from Kaohsiung's harbor takes you to Cijin Island. This narrow strip of land is different from the city center. You can rent a bicycle to explore, visit the black sand beach, or climb to the top of Cihou Lighthouse for views of the area. Cijin is known for fresh seafood - try the grilled squid or fish soup at restaurants along the main street.

Exploring Night Markets and Local Food

Kaohsiung's night markets have a wide variety of Taiwanese street food. Liuhe Night Market, open daily, is busy with tourists. Here you can try local specialties like papaya milk, grilled seafood, and stinky tofu. For a more local experience, visit Ruifeng Night Market, which operates on specific days of the week. Try Taiwanese-style fried chicken, bubble tea, and oyster omelets at this active market.

Walking Along Love River

The Love River flows through central Kaohsiung. You can walk or bike along its riverside promenade. Cafes and restaurants with outdoor seating line the banks. For a different view, take a river cruise - boats operate during the day and in the evening when the bridges are lit up.

Seeing the Dome of Light at Formosa Boulevard Station

The Dome of Light at Formosa Boulevard MRT Station is an impressive sight. This massive glass artwork, designed by Italian artist Narcissus Quagliata, is the largest of its kind in the world. The dome shows themes of water, earth, light, and fire in bright colors. Many people meet here, and it draws many visitors.
