Yilan City, the capital of Yilan County in northeastern Taiwan, is a vibrant urban center with nearby natural wonders. In the city, you can learn about local liquor at the Yilan Distillery Chia Chi Lan Wine Museum, admire artwork in Jimi Square, or taste unique ice cream flavors. Just a short trip away, you'll find hot springs in Jiaoxi and cold springs in Su'ao. Every summer, Yilan City hosts the International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival, a popular event for families.

Transportation to Yilan City

You can reach Yilan City from Taipei by bus, train, or car. Buses and cars use the Hsuehshan Tunnel, making the journey in less than 50 minutes. The train route takes longer but avoids potential traffic jams. Buses leave regularly from Taipei Main Station and Taipei City Hall. In Yilan, you can rent a scooter near the train station to explore the city easily.

Exploring Yilan City Center

Start your Yilan visit at Jimi Square, next to the train station. This park displays artwork inspired by Jimmy Liao, a local artist. Walk for 15 minutes to reach the Yilan Distillery Chia Chi Lan Wine Museum, where you can taste traditional Taiwanese liquors and learn how they're made. For a calm break, walk through Yilan Riverside Park and cross the unique Jin-Mei Pedestrian Bridge.

Hot Springs and Natural Attractions

In Jiaoxi Township, part of Yilan County, you can relax in many hot spring resorts. For something different, visit the Su'ao Cold Spring in Su'ao Township, one of only two cold springs in Southeast Asia. Nature lovers will enjoy the Qilan Sacred Trees Garden, home to indigenous trees over 1,000 years old. Each tree has a name of a historical figure from when it was estimated to be planted.

Local Cuisine and Markets

Yilan is known for its ice cream shops, which you'll find throughout the city center. For a taste of local life, visit the Dongmen Night Market. It's small but authentic, with affordable food options. If you're willing to travel, the Luodong Night Market in nearby Luodong Township has more Taiwanese snacks and goods. Try local foods like soy-marinated dishes, stuffed starch ball desserts, and oyster omelets.

Annual Festivals and Events

The Yilan International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival runs from July to August. This event includes performances, exhibitions, and interactive play areas for visitors of all ages. From March to May, the Yilan Green Expo focuses on ecology and environmental education, with areas dedicated to introduction, ecological information, hands-on experiences, and children's activities.

Day Trips from Yilan City

From Yilan City, you can easily explore other parts of Yilan County. Take a boat trip to Guishan Island to see submarine hot springs and possibly spot dolphins. Hike in the Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area for mountain views and forest trails. For a cultural trip, visit the National Center for Traditional Arts to learn about various Taiwanese art forms through exhibitions and workshops.
