In Bellingham, 90 miles north of Seattle, you can spot orcas breaching from the deck of a San Juan Islands ferry, walk through moss-covered forests to Whatcom Falls, or ski down Mount Baker's slopes in winter. From Squalicum Harbor, watch fishing boats return with their daily catch or join a whale-watching expedition to see gray whales and sea lions.

Maritime Activities from Squalicum Harbor

At Squalicum Harbor, the second largest port in Puget Sound, you'll see fishing boats unloading their catch and 1,900 vessels ranging from commercial fishing boats to private sailboats. Take a whale watching tour or hop on a ferry to the San Juan Islands - companies run daily trips from 9 AM to sunset. Since 2019, the waterfront district has added new walking paths along the shore, with metal sculptures by local artists and waterfront restaurants where you can watch boats entering the harbor.

Walking and Hiking at Whatcom Falls Park

In Whatcom Falls Park's 241 acres, you'll find four waterfalls dropping through a rocky gorge. Walk 5.5 miles of trails that wind past the falls and through cedar and maple forests. Stop at the 1939 sandstone bridge for a view of the 20-foot main waterfall. The park connects several neighborhoods through its trail network and includes a salmon hatchery where you can see young fish. Cool off in designated swimming areas during summer months, or use one of the picnic areas equipped with tables and charcoal grills.

Transportation and Access

Drive to Bellingham on Interstate 5 - the trip takes 90 minutes from Seattle and 60 minutes from Vancouver. Fly into Bellingham International Airport, which connects to Seattle daily and runs seasonal flights to Las Vegas and Hawaii. If you're heading to Alaska, board the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system at Bellingham Cruise Terminal. City buses connect major areas, with most routes running every 30 minutes between downtown, Western Washington University, and the waterfront.

Arts and Community Events

The Bellingham Symphony Orchestra performs monthly at the Mount Baker Theatre, a 1927 movie palace with original Art Deco details and murals. Western Washington University's theater department puts on plays and musicals throughout the year at venues across the city. Between April and December, shop at the Saturday Farmers Market, where 50+ local farmers and artisans sell produce, crafts, and prepared foods. Musicians perform at the market from noon to 2 PM, while local chefs demonstrate seasonal cooking techniques.
