The city of Glendale is located in the state of Arizona, in the United States. It is a suburb of Phoenix, and is part of the Greater Phoenix metropolitan area. The population of Glendale was 226,721 at the 2010 census.
The city was founded in 1884 by William John Murphy and his business partner Lewis Adams. They named the city after Glendale, Scotland, where Adams had lived. Murphy had visited Glendale while on a scouting trip for a railroad route.
The city was incorporated in 1906. It became a major center for the citrus industry, and is now home to the headquarters of the Sundt Corporation, the largest contractor in the United States.
Glendale is a desert city, located at the edge of the Sonoran Desert. The city has a number of parks, including the 61-acre (24 ha) Glendale City Park. The city also has a number of golf courses, and is home to the Arizona Cardinals
