Yosemite's Highest Waterfall
North America's tallest waterfalls, drops 2,425 ft in three sections, attracting hikers and photographers all year.
Half Dome in Yosemite is a 5,000-foot natural wonder, challenging hikers with a 16-mile trail and steep cable climb to the summit.
Yosemite National Park is home to the formidable Half Dome, a towering rock formation that has become an icon of the park. Rising nearly 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) above Yosemite Valley and 8,800 feet (2,682 meters) above sea level, Half Dome is a testament to the power of natural forces, having been shaped by weathering and erosion over countless centuries.
Half Dome is not just a visual spectacle but also a favorite for hikers and climbers from around the world. The most famous route to the summit is the Half Dome Trail, which requires visitors to take on a rigorous 14- to 16-mile (22.5 to 25.7 kilometers) round-trip hike that takes at least 10 to 12 hours to complete. This hike is known for its final section: the Half Dome cables. The steel cables assist adventurers as they ascend the steep granite slope to the peak. This portion can be challenging, and hikers should be in good physical condition and prepared with gloves and proper footwear.
Climbing Half Dome requires a permit, a system implemented to manage the number of visitors on the natural environment and improve safety. Permits are in high demand, particularly during the busy summer months, so planning ahead is crucial.
The rock's sheer face is also a draw for rock climbers. The first successful ascent was in 1875, and since then, the routes have increased, each offering different levels of difficulty and requiring varied climbing skills. The most popular route among climbers is the Regular Northwest Face.
Whether seen from afar or up close, Half Dome's appearance is impressive. Its geological history is part of the Sierra Nevada batholith, and it stands as a symbol of the enduring natural beauty that Yosemite offers. Visitors can also enjoy views of Half Dome from various points in Yosemite Valley, particularly Glacier Point and the meadows in the valley itself.
Nature lovers should note that Half Dome is also a home for various wildlife species, and its surrounding areas are filled with forested trails and clear streams.
