Reno, Nevada, sits in the High Eastern Sierra foothills and calls itself "The Biggest Little City in the World." In Reno, you can ski at nearby Sierra Nevada resorts, admire art installations along the Truckee River, or try your luck at the city's casinos. The city's restaurants serve a variety of cuisines, and annual events like Hot August Nights and the Great Reno Balloon Race draw visitors throughout the year. Reno's mix of urban and natural environments makes it a distinctive destination in the American West.

Location and Geography

Reno is located in the Truckee River valley, on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. You'll find the city about 22 miles north of Lake Tahoe and 45 minutes from popular ski resorts. At 4,500 feet elevation, Reno experiences a high desert climate with four distinct seasons. The surrounding area includes both alpine forests and high desert terrain, allowing you to explore varied natural environments close to the city center.

Outdoor Recreation

The Sierra Nevada mountains provide numerous skiing and snowboarding opportunities in winter. You can choose from 18 ski resorts within driving distance of Reno, including Northstar California, Palisades Tahoe, and Mount Rose. During summer, the Truckee River becomes a focal point for activities. You can go kayaking, rafting, or spend time relaxing on its banks. For hiking and mountain biking, head to the nearby Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, which has trails suitable for all skill levels.

Arts and Culture

Reno's art scene is active and expanding. The Nevada Museum of Art, the only accredited art museum in the state, displays a collection of contemporary and traditional works. Every July, you can attend Artown, a month-long festival with over 400 events, many free to the public. In the Midtown District, you'll see over 100 outdoor murals on buildings throughout the area. Take a self-guided tour to view these colorful works up close.

Downtown and Riverwalk District

The center of Reno is its downtown area, marked by the iconic Reno Arch on Virginia Street. Along the Truckee River, the Riverwalk District has many restaurants, bars, and shops. You can stroll along the river path, stopping at parks or outdoor sculptures. For a unique urban adventure, try the 164-foot outdoor climbing wall at the Whitney Peak Hotel, which claims to be the world's tallest.

Food and Dining

Reno's restaurant scene includes a wide range of options. In the Midtown District, you'll find many local favorites. Try Two Chicks for breakfast, or sample craft beers at Brasserie Saint James. For an upscale dinner, consider the Atlantis Steakhouse or Bimini Steakhouse at the Peppermill Casino. The Little Nugget Diner serves the Awful Awful burger, a local favorite that appeared on the Travel Channel's "Food Wars."

Annual Events

Throughout the year, Reno hosts several major events. In August, Hot August Nights celebrates classic cars with parades, concerts, and drag races. September brings the Great Reno Balloon Race, which fills the sky with colorful hot air balloons. Other popular events include Street Vibrations (a motorcycle rally) and the Reno Air Races. These events bring visitors from around the world and highlight different aspects of Reno's culture and history.
