South Lake Tahoe, the largest town on Lake Tahoe's shores, straddles the California-Nevada border. This alpine destination is known for its natural beauty and year-round activities. You can take in panoramic views from the Heavenly Gondola, sunbathe on sandy beaches, or ski down snowy slopes. The town also has casinos and a variety of restaurants.

Location and Geography

South Lake Tahoe is situated at an elevation of 6,237 feet (1,901 m) in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The city extends along the southern edge of Lake Tahoe, covering an area of 16.6 square miles (43 km2). Its unique position on the California-Nevada state line gives you easy access to both states' attractions. The surrounding landscape consists of pine-covered mountains, clear waters, and sandy beaches.

Year-Round Activities

In winter, South Lake Tahoe transforms into a popular skiing destination. Three major ski resorts - Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Mountain Resort, and Sierra-at-Tahoe - provide varied terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. During summer, you can go hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing. The nearby Desolation Wilderness, a 64,000-acre protected area, is ideal for backpacking and day hikes among alpine lakes and granite peaks.

Lake Tahoe's Beaches and Water Sports

South Lake Tahoe has long, sandy beaches along the shoreline. In the warmer months, you can swim, kayak, paddleboard, and jet-ski. For a unique experience, take a scenic cruise on an authentic Mississippi paddlewheeler or try scuba diving in the lake's clear waters. If you enjoy fishing, you can cast a line for several species of trout and salmon that inhabit the lake.

Heavenly Village and Gondola

At the heart of South Lake Tahoe is Heavenly Village, a pedestrian-friendly area filled with shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. The centerpiece of the village is the Heavenly Gondola, which operates nearly year-round. As you ascend 2.4 miles up the mountain, you'll see views of the lake and surrounding mountains. At the top, you can hike trails, visit scenic viewpoints, and dine while overlooking the landscape.

Casinos and Nightlife

Just across the state line in Stateline, Nevada, you'll find a strip of casinos that add a touch of Las Vegas to the alpine setting. Harrah's Lake Tahoe, Harveys, Bally's Lake Tahoe, and the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino have gaming floors, live entertainment, and nightclubs. Even if you don't gamble, the casinos often host concerts and shows featuring well-known artists.

Accommodation Options

South Lake Tahoe has a wide range of lodging options. You can stay at luxury resorts like the Edgewood Tahoe Resort, boutique hotels such as The Landing Resort & Spa, or more budget-friendly motels. For a different experience, consider renting a cabin or vacation home. Campgrounds and RV parks are also available if you prefer to stay closer to nature.

Getting There and Getting Around

The most convenient way to reach South Lake Tahoe is by flying into Reno-Tahoe International Airport, about an hour's drive away. You can rent a car at the airport or take the South Tahoe Express bus directly to Heavenly Village. Once in town, a local bus service operated by the Tahoe Transportation District helps you get around. In winter, Heavenly Ski Resort runs its own free shuttle service.

Local Events and Festivals

South Lake Tahoe hosts numerous events throughout the year. The Harveys Outdoor Summer Concert Series brings popular musicians to perform under the stars. In winter, the SnowGlobe Music Festival attracts electronic music fans. Throughout the year, you'll find farmers markets, art fairs, and sporting events that reflect the local community's interests and activities.
