Namangan is a city in Uzbekistan. It is the administrative, economic, and cultural center of Namangan Region. The city is located on the slopes of the Fan Mountains, on the banks of the Syr Darya River. Population: 527,600 (1989).

Namangan is an ancient city. It was first mentioned as Nakhichevan in the 9th century AD. In the 14th century, it became the capital of the Fergana Valley. In the 18th century, it was annexed by the Khanate of Kokand. In 1876, it became part of the Russian Empire.
