Mahikeng, formerly Mafikeng, is a town in the North West province of South Africa. It is the capital of the Mahikeng Local Municipality. The town is situated on the banks of the Mooi River, about 240 km west of Johannesburg. Mahikeng is the birthplace of Nelson Mandela and the home of the Setswana language.
The town is the commercial and administrative centre of the district municipality and the provincial government. The main economic activities are agriculture, mining, manufacturing and tourism. The main tourist attractions are the Mooi River, the Setswana Cultural Village and the Makgadikgadi Pans.
