Lienz is located in East Tyrol, separated from the rest of Tyrol by a section of Italian territory. Summers in Lienz are warm and comfortable, while winters bring cold temperatures with clear skies, suitable for winter sports.

Exploring the Town Center

Lienz’s Hauptplatz (Main Square) features Liebburg Castle from the 16th century, which currently functions as the town hall. In the summer, the square becomes a pedestrian area where you can sit at a café or visit local shops. Nearby, Johannesplatz houses the Parish Church of St. Andreas, built in 1450, known for its Baroque altar.

Bruck Castle and Museum

Bruck Castle, constructed in the 13th century, overlooks Lienz from a hilltop. It contains the Museum of the City of Lienz, which presents the region's history and culture, and the Albin Egger-Lienz Gallery, featuring works by the local artist Albin Egger-Lienz. The castle’s park is home to approximately 15 bat species.

Hiking and Skiing

You can hike and cycle in the nearby mountains during the summer months. The Drava Cycle Route runs through Lienz, offering a ride along the river. In the winter, the Zettersfeld and Hochstein ski areas are close to the town, with slopes suitable for different skill levels. Additionally, the Osttirodler on Hochstein mountain operates year-round as a toboggan run.

Natural Sites Nearby

Driving a short distance from Lienz, you reach Hohe Tauern National Park, Austria's largest nature reserve. The park includes alpine meadows, glaciers, and waterfalls. The Lienz Dolomites, visible from the town, offer trails for hiking and climbing. Lake Tristacher See, located 5 kilometers from Lienz, is a place for swimming and relaxation in the summer.

Getting There and Around

You can reach Lienz via road and rail. The Felbertauern road and tunnel link Lienz to North Tyrol, and trains connect it to other Austrian cities and Italy. Most of the town's sites are walkable, and local buses are available for farther destinations. Bicycle rentals allow you to travel around the town and nearby areas.

Cultural Events

Lienz holds events year-round that reflect local culture. In July, the Olala street theater festival features performers in the town's streets and squares. During Advent, a Christmas market operates in the main square, with stalls offering local crafts and seasonal foods.
