Toblach - Dobbiaco, a small village in South Tyrol, Italy, sits at the gateway to the Dolomites. This alpine destination is known for Lake Dobbiaco, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo peaks, and Gustav Mahler's composing hut. You can hike scenic trails, boat on the emerald lake, or attend classical music festivals while surrounded by stunning mountain scenery.

Location in the Heart of the Dolomites

Toblach - Dobbiaco sits in the Puster Valley of South Tyrol, Italy, at an elevation of 1,256 meters. The village straddles an important watershed - to the east, the Drava River begins its journey to the Danube, while to the west, the Rienz River flows toward the Adriatic. From Toblach, you can easily reach the surrounding Dolomite peaks, including the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo just to the south.

Lake Dobbiaco

At the edge of town, Lake Dobbiaco (Toblacher See) has emerald waters reflecting the surrounding mountains. The lake formed naturally from rockfalls and receives water from the Rienz River. You can walk the easy 2.5 km trail circling the lakeshore, passing through forests and wetlands. In summer, rent a pedal boat to get out on the water. Winter transforms the lake into an ice skating rink when temperatures drop low enough for it to freeze.

Year-Round Activities

Toblach has something for every season. In warmer months, hike the network of trails through alpine meadows and forests, with routes suitable for all abilities. You'll find mountain biking options on forest roads and single-track trails. When snow covers the landscape, Toblach becomes a center for cross-country skiing. The Nordic Arena hosts international competitions and gives you access to over 200 km of groomed trails. For downhill skiing, head to nearby resorts like Kronplatz.

A Cultural Destination

Toblach has strong ties to classical music. Composer Gustav Mahler spent three summers here from 1908-1910. You can visit the small cabin where he composed, now preserved as a museum. Toblach honors this connection with the annual Gustav Mahler Music Weeks festival in July, featuring concerts and lectures. The Grand Hotel, built in 1877, is a reminder of Toblach's early days as a resort town.

Getting There and Around

You can reach Toblach by car via the SS49 highway running through the Puster Valley. The closest major airports are in Venice and Innsbruck, each about 2-3 hours away by car. Toblach also has a train station on the Fortezza-San Candido line, with connections to major Italian cities. Once in town, you can walk to most places or take a short bus ride. Renting a car gives you the most flexibility for exploring the surrounding region.
