In Wiener Neustadt, 50 kilometers south of Vienna, you'll walk past a 13th-century cathedral with twin spires, explore a medieval castle where military officers train, and climb the 700-meter Mariahilfberg for views across Lower Austria. Stop at the city museum in an old Jesuit College, stroll along the Grand Canal's waterside paths, or take a 20-minute drive to the cascading Myra Falls.

Getting to Wiener Neustadt

Trains run regularly from Vienna to Wiener Neustadt, taking about 30 minutes. You can drive here via the A2 Süd Autobahn or the S4 Mattersburger Schnellstraße. The city has two airports: the military Wiener Neustadt West Airport (Austria's first airfield) and the civilian Wiener Neustadt East Airport.

Exploring the Medieval Castle and Military Academy

Since 1751, military officers have trained at the Theresian Military Academy, housed in a 13th-century castle. Walk through the St. George Chapel to see medieval glassworks and Emperor Maximilian I's tomb. The castle grounds include a large park and a distinctive water tower from 1909.

The Cathedral and Religious Architecture

The Late-Romanesque cathedral dates to 1279, with Gothic additions in its choir and transept from the 14th century. Sit on the lawn in cathedral square next to the fountain while examining the architecture. Visit the 13th-century former Dominican church, now part of the Neukloster complex.

Walking Trails and Outdoor Areas

Follow marked hiking trails along the Myra river through woodland to reach Myra Falls, 20 minutes west of the city. Walk up Mariahilfberg to find a hilltop shrine and panoramic views of the region. The Grand Canal network crosses through the city with walking paths on both banks.

Cultural Life in Wiener Neustadt

Watch performances from children's shows to operettas at the Stadttheater, set in a converted Carmelite church. Learn about local history at the city museum, located in the 1737 Jesuit College. Visit the Marienmarkt on the main square to buy regional products and food from local vendors.

Day Trips from Wiener Neustadt

Take a 40-minute train ride to Sopron, Hungary, to walk through its medieval old town. Drive one hour to Neusiedler See – Seewinkel National Park, Austria's only steppe national park that extends into Hungary. For Alpine hiking, drive two hours to Gesäuse National Park's mountain trails.
