Frýdek-Místek, a city of 54,000 residents in the Moravian-Silesian Region, sits along the Ostravice River. Walk through Renaissance-era rooms at Frýdek Castle, climb the twin towers of the Baroque Basilica of the Visitation of Our Lady, or shop at local markets under medieval arcades in Místek's town square. The city's location at the foot of the Beskids Mountains makes it a starting point for hiking trips into the surrounding countryside.

Exploring the Twin Centers

The Ostravice River creates a natural boundary between Frýdek and Místek. Begin at Frýdek's Zámecké Square, where 16th-century merchant houses display intricate stone portals and decorated window frames. Cross the river to reach Místek's Svobody Square, where you'll walk under medieval arcades that connect historic burgher houses. Local vendors still sell their goods here, continuing a centuries-old tradition.

Religious Architecture Through Centuries

The Basilica of the Visitation of Our Lady dominates Frýdek's skyline with its twin towers. Inside, you'll find the venerated statue of the Virgin Mary, which has drawn pilgrims since 1777. Walk along the former town wall line to reach the Church of Saint Judoc, where you can examine the original 1612 Gothic stonework. The Church of Saint James the Great near Místek's main square contains well-preserved baroque altars and 17th-century paintings.

Museum and Cultural Events

The Museum of Moravian-Silesian Beskids occupies several floors of Frýdek Castle. You'll see displays of traditional folk costumes, local craftwork, and mineral collections from the Beskids region. Time your visit for the International Folklore Festival in summer to watch dance groups and musicians perform in both town squares. The annual Festival of Twin Towns brings artists and performers from partner cities across Europe.

Parks and Recreation

Several walking paths follow the Ostravice River's banks, connecting the city's green spaces. The Sady Bedřicha Smetany park includes children's playgrounds and rest areas with benches overlooking the river. From here, you can take marked hiking trails leading to the Beskids Mountains. The nearby Olešná Reservoir has a 4-kilometer paved circuit for cycling and inline skating, with swimming areas open during summer months.
