Hodonín, a town of 24,000 residents in South Moravia, sits along the Morava River on the Slovak border. Walk up the Art Nouveau town hall's viewing tower for panoramic views, watch chimpanzees and lemurs at the intimate zoo, or take an evening cruise on the Morava River. In the surrounding area, you'll find traditional wine cellars carved into hillsides and spa facilities where you can swim, steam, and get massages.
Getting to Hodonín
Hodonín lies 51 kilometers southeast of Brno, with regular train connections on the Břeclav–Olomouc line. You can reach the town by car via the I/55 road, which connects Břeclav to Uherské Hradiště. The town maintains both road and rail border crossings with neighboring Holíč in Slovakia.
Family Activities and Zoo
At the Hodonín Zoo, opened in 1977, you can see 70 endangered species including chimpanzees, green monkeys, and lemurs. Children will enjoy the adjacent 3D maze, which includes 190 meters of suspended bridges across three difficulty levels. The maze has routes suitable for both children and adults, making it an engaging activity for the whole family.
Town Center and Architecture
The Art Nouveau town hall, built between 1902 and 1904 by architect Ernst von Gotthilf, stands in the center of the town square. Climb 150 steps to reach the tower's observation platform, where you can see from the White Carpathians to Pálava. Near the town hall, you'll find the Church of Saint Lawrence, which dates to the 13th century and received its current baroque appearance during renovations in the 1780s.
River and Relaxation
Join an evening cruise on the Morava River from the U Jezu Pier - you can reach it by following the green tourist trail. At the Hodonín Day Spa's wellness center, you can choose from mineral baths, massages, and therapeutic treatments. The Gallery of Fine Arts displays rotating exhibitions of contemporary works alongside permanent collections of South Moravian art.
Wine Culture
Visit the nearby village of Mutěnice to explore its 600 traditional wine cellars, known as Mutěnické Búdy. Follow the red T. G. Masaryk tourist trail from the town hall to reach these cellars, where wine makers often welcome visitors for tastings and conversations about local wine-making methods. Climb the Vyšicko Lookout Tower above the cellars for views across the vineyard-covered landscape.
