Constance, a city on the shores of Lake Constance, offers visitors a rich experience of German culture and nature. You can explore the medieval Niederburg district, admire the striking Imperia statue, or take a short trip to the colorful Mainau Island. The city's university creates a youthful atmosphere, while its location at the intersection of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria provides a unique cultural blend. Whether you're interested in history, lakeside relaxation, or exploring the surrounding region, Constance has something for you.

Wandering Through the Old Town (Altstadt)

In Constance's Old Town, known as Niederburg, you'll walk on cobblestone streets past buildings from the Middle Ages. Look for the 15th-century Hohenzollernhaus with its detailed frescoes, and the 16th-century Rathaus (City Hall). At the center of this district, you'll find the Marktstätte (marketplace) with the Kaiserbrunnen (Imperial Fountain), decorated with statues of former emperors. Don't miss the Haus zum Rosgarten, a former medieval butchers' guild that now houses a museum about regional history.

Exploring Lake Constance and the Harbor

Constance's connection to the lake is evident in its active harbor area. You can stroll along a palm tree-lined promenade extending from the Rhine bridge, with many cafes and restaurants offering lake views. In the harbor, you'll see the 9-meter tall Imperia statue, erected in 1993 and now considered a symbol of Constance. From mid-April to mid-October, boat tours depart from Constance to other towns around the lake, giving you a different view of the region.

Learning at the University of Konstanz

The University of Konstanz, established in 1966, plays a significant role in the city's life. As one of Germany's 11 "Universities of Excellence," it attracts students and researchers from many countries. You can visit the university's modern campus on the Gießberg, which contrasts with the city's older areas. The campus design features connected buildings to encourage interaction between students and faculty.

Visiting Mainau Island: A Floral Paradise

A short distance from Constance is Mainau Island, known for its beautiful gardens. This 110-acre island has a wide variety of flowers, including about 10,000 rose bushes. You can also see thousands of butterflies and a 13th-century baroque palace on the island. To reach Mainau, take a boat or walk across the pedestrian bridge for an easy day trip from Constance.

Exploring Museums and Cultural Sites

Constance has several museums where you can learn about the region's history and culture. Visit the Rosgartenmuseum, located in the former butchers' guild building, to see local and regional artifacts. At SEA LIFE Konstanz, you can observe various marine species, including those native to Lake Constance and the Rhine River. Next door, the Lake Constance Nature Museum (Bodensee-Naturmuseum) teaches visitors about local plants and animals.

Participating in Seasonal Events and Festivals

Constance hosts various events throughout the year that highlight its culture. In May, the International Lake Constance Week transforms the old town harbor into a center for water sports. The Seenachtfest (Lake Night Festival) in August is one of the largest open-air celebrations around Lake Constance. During autumn, you can join apple-themed events celebrating the region's agricultural traditions, while in winter, you can visit the city's Christmas markets.

Discovering the City's Past: The Council of Constance

From 1414 to 1418, Constance was the focal point of European politics and religion during the Council of Constance. This event resolved the Western Schism in the Catholic Church and resulted in the election of Pope Martin V. You can visit the Konzilgebäude (Council Hall), built in 1388 as a warehouse and now used for concerts, to learn more about this important period in the city's history.
