A calm Bavarian town north of Munich, known for its 1886-founded Erdinger wheat beer brewery and Europe's largest indoor water park, Therme Erding.
Located 31 kilometers northeast of Munich, Erding draws visitors to its medieval Gothic towers, traditional beer halls, and the massive Therme Erding spa complex. You'll find locals drinking wheat beer at the Erdinger Weissbräu brewery, while surrounding farms grow wheat and vegetables used in regional Bavarian dishes.
Therme Erding
This 36-acre thermal spa complex includes the Galaxy Waterslide Park with 28 slides stretching 2,850 meters. You can swim in the wave pool or relax in multiple health pools. The retractable roofs open during summer days. The adults-only spa section contains 24 saunas, while the VitalityOasis section lets you use sauna facilities while wearing swimwear.
Erdinger Weissbräu Brewery
The world's largest wheat beer brewery produces 1.8 million hectoliters annually and exports to almost 100 countries. Take a tour Tuesday through Friday at 10:00, 14:00, and 18:00, or Saturday at 10:00 and 14:00. Tours cost €15 and run in German, English, and Italian.
Beer Festivals
The Herbfest in late August runs for 10 days with beer halls and carnival rides. This beer celebration is the third-largest in Upper Bavaria. A mass (1-liter) of festbier costs around €7, less than at Munich's Oktoberfest.
Historic Buildings
The Gothic Schöner Turm tower on Landshuter Straße dates from 1408 and remains the only surviving section of the medieval city wall. The tower withstood the Thirty Years' War and underwent later restoration. Visit the Museum Erding (€3 entrance) to learn about the city's development through local artifacts and exhibits.
